CANARY ISLANDSby Mr. Vincent WONG
The Canaries are a Spanish autonomous archipelago located in the Atlantic Ocean, about 100km west of Morocco. There are seven main islands, namely Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. It has historically been considered a link between the four continents of Africa, North America, South America and Europe. During the Age of Sail, the islands were the main stopover for Spanish galleons to their colonies in the Americas. The islands also initiated the usage of African slaves which gave inspiration to the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Known as the sunshine center of Europe, the temperature is warm all the year round. There are four national parks and five of the islands have been declared a Biosphere Reserve, being home for unique plants such as Dracaena draco and Laurisilva. There are also many historical as well as natural attractions including active volcanoes, beautiful beaches, scenic mountain trails, refined architecture and amazing cultural festivals and carnivals, making the Canaries a very popular tourist destination.
